10p NEW AGE PAPER OF THE COMMUNIST WORKERS' MOVEMENT No.I Mid-Feb. to Mid-Mar. 1978 10 a bit mould. 8: borrows det CHIPS DOWN FOR TINY AND FRIENDS Low paid workers from hotels and restaurants throughout London are planning joint action to smash low wages and Dickensian working conditions. This follows a ten week struggle by workers at the Hotel Metropolein the West End to raise their basic minimum wage from £23 to £50. The strike which challenged Tiny Rowland's multi million pound empire (see Workers' Notebook No 8) failed because of a refusal by the GMWU lead- ership to back their demand and because many im- migrant workers - afraid of losing their work permit - returned to work after bullying tactics by the management. Full time officials, Mr. J. Tilson and Mr. T Rowl, claimed that the demand broke the govern- ment's 10% rule - though such a rule is in fact only applicable where basic minimum wages have already been negociated. When the Hotel refus- ed to take back the eight workers still on strike after ten weeks, the u- nion refused to fight for their reinstatement. However, shop steward John Bruce said that, though they were forced to look for other jobs, the fight would not stop there. Now it is expected that they and other hot- el workers - many of whom are immigrants - together with militant unionists, will organi- se to challenge their "official" leadership. Following this plan for joint action, an- other strike of low paid catering workers is tak- ing place at the Garners Steak House chain in Lon- don (Cont. HYDE AND SEEK When the infamous Tame- side Council agreed to allow Nazis to hire muni- cipally-owned property for meetings, the Tamesi- de Trades Council called upon anti-fascists to pro- test. It was known that the National Front had booked Hyde Town Hall for the evening of Thursday 26th January. That evening, over one thousand anti-fascists were present in and aro- und Hyde Market Square which is directly opposite the Town Hall. Liverpool Trades Council had problems trying to hire a coach. Every coach firm contacted claimed that they were fully book- ed for 26th January. The reasons for this extraordinary event are hard to imagine. Could it be, on that snow-swept ev- ening that ski-sports had become the rage? Whatever the reason, an ancient coach was hired and filled to capacity. Just outside Hyde, pol- ice searched coaches and made all passengers dis- embark. This delaying tac- tic did nothing to "impro- ve" the non-existent res- pect that the average pro- letarian is supposed to have for the "boys in blue" At the Market Square, the surplus of police be- came immediately obvious. This government is a fascist regime which has murdered those who oppose it by the thousand, par- ticularly all suspected supporters of the Ethio- pian People's Revolution- ary Party. For instance, 1500 young people were murdered in one day in May alone! (Cont. Page 2) SO, I GOT THE BUS TO THE STATION, AND THE PRICE WAS UP A PENNY...
