6 (Cont. from P.5.) in building the vanguard Marxist-Leninist party, they would struggle for national independence ११ as an inseparable part of that for the Austrian socialist revolution". The main enemies of the world's peoples were the two super- powers, and the broadest possible united front had to be formed against them. The Soviet Union is the more belligerant of the two superpowers, but is nothing but a cardboard bear rapidly reaching a sticky end. ** (REVISIONIST a word used to describe ideas, persons or organisations which pretend to be Marxist- Leninist, but who have re- moved its revolutionary teachings. ANSCHLUSS The union of Austria and Nazi Germany in March 1938 which was mani- pulated by Hitler and which destroyed Austrian indepen- dence. In 1965 the Soviet Union opposed the entry of Austria into the EEC because they falsely said it would be tantamount to an "economic Anschluss".) INDIA A year has gone since the defeat of Mrs Gandhi in the In- dian elections and the victory of the Janata party. The "state of Emer- gency" has gone, and In dia now has a govern- ment that leans towards the USA rather than the Soviet Union (though, like Mrs. Gandhi's, it keeps a line open to the other superpower). So, there have been some changes, but no basic ones as far as the Indian people are concerned oppression by landlords and busi- nessmen (state or pri- vate) continues just as before. Frustration at the failure of Janata to fulfil the hopes many had of it has meant that some people have even turned back to Mrs, Gandhi that's why there has been a swing to wards her in some of the southern Indian states recently. The continuing survival of the old systems of oppression in India shows that the line adopted by the Marxist-Leninists ten years ago is still essentially correct; that is, the line of armed struggle, start- ing where the oppress- ing classes and imperia- lism are weakest in the countryside and going on to liberate the towns, as the first stage of the Indian Re- volution. 'SOUTH YEMEN Asmara Aden' Djibouti Berbera ABABA Hartar Hargeisa ADDIS ETHIOPIAN OGADE! KENYA SOMALIA Nairobi MOGADISHU MILES ETHIOPIA The defeat of the regular Somali forces in the Ogaden war was mainly due to Soviet and Cuban armed intervention. It seems likely now that Ethiopian government, Soviet and Cuban forces no longer needed in the Ogaden will be transferred to Eritrea to at- tack the liberation movements there, and will also be used against other liberation fronts in Ethiopia. People's Resistance The Russians and Cubans have so far been able to stop the Eritrean forces from completing the liberation of their country, but they have not succeeded in occupying liberated areas, or in intimi- dating the Eritrean people from supporting their freedom fighters. The Eritrean People's Lib- eration Front has hit back hard at the new invaders, kil- ling some Cubans and capturing or destroying Soviet tanks and East German trucks in ambushes. The Marxist-Leninists of the Ethiopian People's Revo- lutionary Party have already come under attack from Soviet "advisers" and Cuban troops. There have been several armed clashes with Cuban troops in Addis Ababa, Ethi- opia's capital, in which E.P. R.P. came off best. Soviet K.G.B. men are now advising the Ethiopian fascists' se- cret police, and they have helped in the interrogation of E.P.R.P. suspects, The E.P.R.F. and the Ethiopian peoples under its leadership continue to fight, however. Ethiopia really is be- coming a Soviet Vietnam. different bourgeois parties ++ and the capitalist system in general, the French Marxist- Leninists (genuine communists) are putting up candidates for the election. Between January 7th and 9th, a battle took place in northern Ethiopia between the EPRP-led Ethiopian Peoples Revol- utionary Army and an elite government unit. With the support of the local pea- sants, EPRA won, killing 55 enemy soldiersand cap- turing 145, as well as large quantities of equip- ment. +++ KARAMEH A TURNING POINT some +++ On March 21st, 10 years ago, Israeli tanks, troops and helicopters crossed the river Jordan to attack the town of al-Karameh. There was a Palestinian refugee camp there, where Palestinian freedom-fighters were based. Although they were outnumbered and out- gunned, the fighters of Al Fateh decided not to retreat but to make a stand there. They did and defeated the Israelis. Afterwards, the Israeli Chief of Staff announced that "the back of the al-Fateh movement has been broken", but this was soon shown to be nonsense. The news of the Pale- stinian victory gave a great boost to the morale of all the Arab peoples, which had suffered in the defeat of June 1967. It also brought thousands of young Palestinians into the ranks of the resistance organisations. It was a great turning point in the process of the Palestinian people taking their destiny back into their own hands. FRENCH ELECTIONS (continued from p.5) coming to power of pro-Soviet forces, while at the same time they will be happy if the phoney communists do not com- plete their self exposure by coming to power at this stage, when the moment is not yet ripe for Soviet aggression against Europe. REVOLUTIONARY POLITICS One thing is feared by both superpowers, and also by the handful of monopoly capital- ists who control the establi- shed political parties. This is the growth of a real, organised revolutionary work- ing class movement. Using this occasion to has- ten the exposure of all the no bounis800) We will be reporting on their successes in the next issue. ARMY CLICHÉ MAMUAL MINIMI SOVIET SOCIAL-IMPERIALISM IN AFRICA A conference on this subject is being organised by IKWEZI, a Marxist- Lenin- ist journal of Southern African political analysis. It will be held in a few months time, and preparatory work is well in hand. It will be a broad-based con- ference and cover such topics as: The SovietUnion and Southern African liberation movements. The Soviet Union in the Horn of Africa. Are the Cubans used as mercenaries in Africa? Is Angola a neo-colony of the Soviet Union? Soviet 'aid' in Africa. The role of revisionist parties as agents of the Soviet Union. Soviet theories about African development. These are all subjects of great importance to revolutionaries everywhere. There is no doubt that every defeat for social-imperialism at the hands of the African people is a victory for the British and world's peoples. All enquiries and suggestions to: IKWEZI 8-11 Victoria Centre Nottingham. BRAINS Waiter: "Would you like to try our speciality sir?" Customer: "What sort of dish is that?" Waiter: "Brains sir, prolet- arian brains at 50p per portion or monopoly capitalist brains at £10 per portion." Customer: "That's a bit of a jump, what is the reason of the big price discrepancy?" Waiter: "Well sir, if you knew how many monopoly capitalists we have to shoot before we can get a plate of their brains, you would understand why the price is so high.
