8 FREEDOM SPIRIT LIVES! On Saturday, March 11th, over one hundred people attended a meeting held at Friends House, London to commemorate the passing of a militant and courageous freedom fighter - Robert Sobukwe. He was a fearless leader of the Azanian (South African) people and a founding member of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania(PAC) - the leading liberation movement in South Africa. He died recently as a result of years of imprisonment and persecu- tion by the racist South African State. The participants paid tribute to Sobukwe with a minute's silence. Among the speakers were a represen- tative of the African National Congress (African Nationalist) who pointed out that Sobukwe had been murdered by Vorsters' fascism after nine years of solitary confinement on Robben Island (South Africa's notorious prison) followed by nine years banishment to the town of Kimberley. He also pointed out that peace- ful struggle had been met with "blood, brimstone and fire" proving that armed struggle is the only way the Azanian people will win lib- eration. A speaker from the Black Peoples Convention (BPC) paid a moving tribute to Sobukwe, whom he revealed, the speakers were a represen- the establishment of the BPC. The High Commisioner of Zambia commemorated the memory of Sobukwe whose death she said, was a loss to all Africa. A representative of the South West African Peoples Organisation (SWAPO) also spoke. The final speaker was a member of the executive council of the PAC who praised the heroic struggles Sobukwe led and waged in his lifetime. Apart from the other speakers there many messages from various organisations including the Bangladesh Solidarity Campaign, the Afro-Caribbean Self Help Organisation, the Anti- Apartheid Movement (Bonn) and the International De- fence and Aid Fund. The Azania Singers at sev- eral points during the meeting sung beautiful renditions of Freedom songs as well as revolu- tionary poems praising the struggles of Sharpville and the more recent events of Soweto. These as well as the speeches were warmly applauded by the audience. As many people said the memory of Robert Sobukwe will live forever as he joins the ranks of many who have fallen victim of this worldwide hated regime, now tottering on its last legs before the withering fire of the Azanian Peoples attack. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Garner's Manager on Weapon Charge Low paid catering work- ers, battling for union recognition in Garner's Steak House restaurants, are among the first to be hard hit by a recent ban on marches in London. The unity and militancy of these workers - among the lowest paid in the country - has shocked the Garner's management. The owner, Cyril Maigo- lis is alleged to have said: "I want to be the George Ward of catering".
