(11 our people to act as one, withdrawing their labour, a lot would be done, really, [you know] to advance the Socialist cause. So that is why, comrades, I am trying to point out to you that [you know] imperialism Cannot be invincible. There will always [to] a lot which can be done [you know] to Crush imperialists! And [in fact] one should be very, very grateful that there are great leaders like Comrade Kim Il Sung and Comrade people who are prepared to give uncondition al support to [people who are committed to] the struggle against imperialism. I do not wish [really] to repeat what has been said here because I presume that some people have been here from the morning [from 10 a.m.,] and [people] have been expressing their opinions, and it was a very, very, very important exercise. It was not just a mere intellectual exercise, you see, it was very important that people should meet; they are in a position to examine critically all the situations and try to analyse them. What is it that makes [that] there

• ? to should be failures and setbacks, and - as I have been listening, though I came late - I must really point out that I am very, very impressed; and I hope that as we are organising a memorial service, as The Pan Africanist Congress, next Saturday, in the Asian Centre, to honour our people who were killed in Maseru, our people who have been shot at brutally in Uitenhage [you see], for merely marching [you know] to attend a funeral of those who were killed that all of you who are here [you] will be there with us. And, indeed, we are Saying: All causes of the downtrodden people, all causes of the people who are fighting oppression, whether they are a minority [whether belong to they are in a nation which is dispossessed of its land] those causes must triumph! And an international socialist world must take it upon itself to give full support to people who are struggling against injustice, against exploitation, against oppression. Thank you, Comrades! (12

TO THE SEMINAR ON THE JUCHE IDEA. A submission by the British Anti-Zionist Organisation. The British Anti-Zionist Organisation (Palestine Solidarity) thanks the Mosquito Press and the Organising Committee for their invitation to address this seminar on the Juche idea and we salute the people of the DPRK and their Great Leader Comrade Kim il Sung. We thank the DPRK for the support they have given to the Palestine Liberation Organisation, and the warm welcome they have always given to its Chairman, Abu Amar. We particularly thank the Great Leader Comrade Kim il Sung for his outspoken denunciation of the racist evil called Zionism. We, in BAZO-PS believe that it is particularly important, when dealing with a well-organised and ruthless enemy to fully understand the nature and motivation of that enemy. Thus much of the work of Bazo-PS is in exposing to the world the true nature of Zionism, its history, philosophy, and the record of its murderous actions. Zionism is a 19th century political philosophy, founded by a man named Theodore Herzl. It must clearly be distinguished from Judaeism, a religion over 3000 years old. The Zionist movement existed to establish a homeland for the Jewish people, and today seeks to expand that "homeland", with the aid of imperialism, to subdue and subvert its neighbours, and establish its hegemony over the whole region. Many Zionists today openly declare their racism, proclaiming that Arabs are genetically inferior and only fit for menial tasks. That they have no human rights, since they are barely human and can be treated as such. Comrades, Does this philosophy not sound familiar? Do you not see remarkable similarities with a 20th century political philosophy that started in Germany in the 1920's? It should come, therefore, as no surprise to those who understand the true nature of Zionism to learn that Zionism and Nazism were indeed once allied, one to expel Jews from Europe, the other to force Jews to settle in Palestine. This is the enemy we must destroy. For today the tentacles of Zionism are spreading far and wide from its base in the Zionist entity called by some "The state of Israel". Zionism and Zionist agents on behalf of imperialism have today reared their heads in Nigeria (Involved in a Kidnap attempt); Sri lanka, in support of the repression of the Tamil people; in Central America, as surrogates for the United States; in Ethiopia, with the unscrupulous exploitation of starving people; in South Africa, with its open trade and secret arms deals, its influence and control of the British media (which) makes our task in exposing Zionism so much harder.

Comrades, the Korean revolution started as an armed struggle against Japanese imperialism, some 50 years ago. Today, the Palestinian struggle may be seen in a similar light. The land is occupied by an imperialist power; its people suffer under imperialist oppression, its forces are scattered, many of its people refugees. But the struggle con tinues, confident in the inevitability of final victory. Throny The actions of the Palestinian freedom fighters in the late 1960's brought home to the Zionists their own weakness and vulnerability. By gaining world headlines by some spectacular missions in the 1970's they brought home to U.S. imperialism and its lackeys in Western Europe their own vulnerability. By their heroic stand in Lebanon the Palestinians have been a shining example to freedom fighters all over the world. But, as the Juche idea clearly says, success in the revolutionary struggle comes by building a political as well as military organisation. To quote from Comrade Kim Jong Il: Mole "...politico-ideaological superiority is the essential merit of revolutionary armed forces and the source of their invincibility. It is imperitive, therefore, to knit the army closely from a politico-ideological point of view and steadily raise its politico-ideological level and ensure that im- perialist armies of aggression are defeated by the strength of the politico-ideological superiority of the revolutionary peoples armed forces." An essential part of that politico-ideological theory is the concept of Independence. For as the Korean people have found their own solutions to their own problems in the struggle so must the Palestinian people find their solutions through their own efforts and their own organisations. The Palestine Liberation Organisation is that body. It is the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, and its commandos are its military vanguard. The unity of the organisation is paramount. Whilst, at various times in the long struggle for liberation, tactics may vary, diagreements may be voiced within the democratic framework of the organisation, yet must the overall strategy and unity of purpose be maintained at all costs. Further, the independence of the organisation must be pre- served. he PLO is no flunkey of any Arab State and the Palestinian people are the flunkeys of no other people. Support from friendly forces is always welcome when facing such a formidible enemy, yet such assistance must be uncritical and unconditional, given for the greater cause of the struggle and not for hegemonistic or interventionist motives. As Comrade Kim Jong Il says:

"The revolution in each Country should be carried out responsibly by its own people, the masters, in an independent manner and in a creative way, suitable to its specific conditions." exp.? Comrades, the people in the DPRK have won their struggle against imperialism and seek to expand that victory to the re-unification of all Korea. h. The Palestinian people have yet to acieve that first stage of victory, but be assured they will. They will drive the evil of racist Zionism from the pages of history even as today it is being driven from the fields and valleys of Lebanon. They will establish the free secular and democratic state for all Palestine. Caps? Victory to the PLO. excl. mks? Victory to the struggle of the Korean people. Long live international solidarity. •

Neond. ca. 1150 words The Juche Idea and Liverpool It is clear that the Juche idea is the application of Dialectical Materialism to the present stage of World development. Dialectical Materialism teaches that the source of change in class the World lies inside the World itself. In society the source of and change is the people who are oppressed by society. Consequently the Marxist must base his work on the oppressed people, but more importantly, on the activity of the oppressed people themselves. What Marxism must bring is scientific solutions to the problems the oppressed face, But those scientific solutions must be based on the most detailed, intimate and profound acquaintance with the actual life of the oppressed. The oppressed themselves must be their own liberators. To look outside the activity of the oppressed, to some "condescending" liberal or reformist "saviour" is not merely idealism but also metaphysics - that is, it will not change the and world. The more materialist we are - the more we rely on the independent activity of the masses - the more dialectical - that is, revolutionary, we will be. Comrade Kim Jong Il sums this up by saying that the revolution "is a And he further says: struggle of the masses to free themselves." "It is the communists and the people of the country themselves who are the performers, the masters of this struggle." The Juche idea extends this world outlook of Marxism to the present age, when oppression is above all the oppression of nations and national minorities by imperialism. What Marxism says of the oppressed in general, the Juche idea says of oppressed nations in namely the main in the world. particular: the oppressed nations are the source of change; we must rely on them; we must have intimate knowledge of their lives; they must have complete confidence in themselves, avoiding a flunkeyist their own abilities attitude to the imperialists, having pride in their own achievements. and take Cleaves the way open for and confidence in their own abilities. Anything else risks looking to a "condescending" racist and chauvinist "saviours". Comrade Kim Jong Il expressed this by saying: "Without the sense of national pride that one's nation is inferior to none, without the pride and honour of the revolutionary people, it would be impossible to live up to one's convictions in an independent manner, uphold national [dignity] independent and dignity and emerge victorious in the difficult revolutionary struggle." Liverpool is a city to which these views are particularly relevant, as it is a cosmopolitan port in which the national ? question is very much the primary question. to the fore.

  1. And we can truthfully say that the successes and failures of the oppressed in Liverpool reflect very much the extent to which they have put into practice the Juche idea. Their success in putting into practice Chajusong/Independenee is a precise measure of their success in resisting the oppression they face. The left in Liverpool show no signs of putting the Juche idea into practice. Far from cultivating Chajusong, they are mostly xxx reformist and look to handouts from Westminster to solve the problems of the oppressed people of the city. The left are also communities of overseas origin, totally cut off from these most oppressed, peoples, and have repeatedly that shown complete ignorance of the actual problems the oppressed face. most But the oppressed in Liverpool do put the Juche idea into practice. In 1981 the youth of Toxteth xxx relied on themselves and acted directly to fight the suffocating straitjacket of police harassment that they had faced for years. In doing this, they repeatedly show their contempt for the attempts of the established left to hijack the it struggle and rob it of its independence - its reliance on self - its organisation Chajusong. The Militant came into the area during the riots, trying to get the rioters to join the Labour Party? They were simply chased!! out The CPGB, via the Charles Wootton Centre, tried to keep the struggle within nice legalist and reformist channels. As a result they became completely discredited. The Reformists tried to drown the struggle of the oppressed under a stream of promises of philistine materialist people type. While the blacks wanted to walk the streets with dignity, the Labour Party promised by more home helps! exp. The people of Toxteth have a real pride in themselves, and there genuine is a real pride in black culture and in being black in the area. Xoxwk Toxteth used to be a very prosperous area in the early 19th century, and there are statues of prominent men of that period scattered people around the area. When the blacks discovered that one of the statues of the men was that of a slave-owner, the statue was immediately removed by the direct action of the masses! Many, however, are so downtrodden by capitalist society that they turn to that opium with which the British poison used to stain the Far East. Many undergo moral collapse. But there is also among the people of Toxteth a firm rejection of Capitalist corruption, and a rejection of the whole ethos of imperialism. There is, for example, a very fine black poet in Toxteth whose works are popular throughout the community, and indeed the city. Thus the people of Toxteth practise Chajusong. In Liverpool we have a xxx very vigorous Islamic culture, with many and various religious and cultural activities. Despite the continuous

We have, for example, a flourishing groups of Urdu poets, and many similar independent cultural activities. Pakistanies, Iranians, Yemenis, all retain to the full the independent national and religious identity. And they vigorously repudiate the subjection or domination of Islamic peoples by Zionism or from any other source, upholding the inalienable rights of the Islamic peoples to Chajusong/Independence. There is also some interest among them in Asian Communism. 15 among The Chinese community in Liverpool is the oldest in Europe, and its members It has long been ignored and despised by the local "Left", But they have complete confidence in themselves and practice self-reliance. The Chinese community are almost entirely crime-free, and resists better than any other national minority on Merseyside the prevailing ethos of corruption. The self-help tradition runs deep in Liverpool's Chinese A Chinese pagoda was built for them by the local authority, but it was only after they had asserted real control over it that it began to flourish. The first organiser at the Pagoda, council-appointed, had been the non-Liverpudlian son of a Taiwanese general! The Chinese people. They retain totally their interest in China, and display great patriotism towards the People's Republic. The whole community celebrates national day; and what great assertion of Chajusong could there be than the er on of China sight, at the celebrations, of the Lord Mayor of Liverpool standing on both British flag a platform decorated with the Union Jack and the Chinese red flag! They do bring the Asian Communist tradition to Liverpool, and I for one wouldn't have developed as I did had it not been for the influences of the Chinese community, even if only to the extent of the bookshops. The Irish in Liverpool have a long and proud history of independent however, Care of ancestry. 6 not struggle, producing such heroes as Jim Larkin. The British state has over many years succeeded in reducing this independence so that I have heard Irish people bitterly comment that although two Liverpudlians in five were Irish, "now they're all Brits". Certainly there isn't a vigorous Republican movement on Merseyside, and the Irish centre even refuses to put An Phoblacht/Republican News on sale on the grounds that it is"political". (presumably there's no politics inside the 'Irish Independent' or 'Irish Times'!) But that is only one side of the picture. 'An Phoblacht/Republican News' is, I am informed, by the bookshop that sells it, the most popular left paper on Merseyside! And there language is a lot of interest in Irish culture, with classes in Irish running successfully, and attempts being made to teach some Irish history. Clearly the Juche idea presents the way forward here. 6 I myself am Welsh, and the Liverpool Welsh have tended to melt away, with the small Welsh chapels around the city struggling on with

But my experx(i)ence is that the Welsh people do have national pride, and I have heard a lot of interest expressed in tuning into to Channel S4C, to seen(e) the adventures of SuperTed! Most Welsh people feel some link with Wales, and I, for one, am horrified by the crushing of Welsh culture and traditional life in Wales. (however, The Jewish population of Liverpool have largely gone over to Zionismy(m) and the cult of Israel dominates many Synagogue activities. (There is) But we have a small but vocal Jewish Socialist Group in Liverpool, and what is interesting from the viewpoint of the Juche idea is that they insist that Zionism is alien to the real Jewish culture and life, (Western) with its roots in a quite different kind of life to that of modern America- -centred Zionism. Hopefully this authentic Jewish culturecan be restored as the Jewish people cultivate Chajusong! As can be seen from this brief survey, those national groups in Liverpool who have best resisted oppression are precisely those who have practised the Juche idea. As that is the case, how much more success would be achieved if (were popularised) we were to popularisel(s) the philosophy of Juche among the masses. If we can truly merge(e) ourselves (with the) masses, and if (independently) those masses can gain the confidence to æt(a) and the skill to tackle(e) their problems, (k) then surely the future will be bright.

KFC The Korea Friendship Committee was formed to foster friendship between the British and Korean peoples, to work for the reunification of the country and, of course, to fight the imperialist position taken by the British Government towards the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The division of Korea is an international scandal causing heartbreak and anguish to all Korean people - north and south. The division serves the interests of no-one but US imperialists, allowing them total manipulation of their puppet so-called state in the south. Of course, they would never be able to achieve or maintain such a position over a united, independent, non-alligned Koryo. As in so many other areas, the Thatcher government which, as we know, is Thatcher herself, adopts a stance of total todyism to the Reagan administra- tion. To quote David Waddington of the Home office (the same David Waddington who acts in a God-like way over the lives of thousands of Asian, African and other oppressed people, refusing visas for husbands, wives and children to be reunited in Britain, and deporting and expelling others) "Her Majesty's Government has maintained a policy of non-recognising North Korea as a state." I say to you: Who the hell does Her Majesty's Government think it is to bestow or withhold recognition? What bloody arrogance! The government of the DPRK has proved itself one of the most long-serving, stable and popular in the world. The Korea Friendship Committee has several sympathetic Members of Parliament amongst its membership who regularly table questions about the British Government's attitude in Parliament. We are not going to let the Government get away with their inaction. As usual when dealing with the capitalist world, it could be the prospect of increased trade and profits which will lead to a change of view. The DPRK has recently expressed the intention to pursue joint ventures, in line with the great leader Kim Il Sung's inspired and correct analysis: "quote which I will let you have... Long live the Korean people and their sacred struggle for re-unification!
