THE JUCHE-IDEA AND THE CRISIS OF MARXISM - Viewpoints of The Marxist-Leninist Groups of Finland - Dear comrades and friends, On behalf of the Marxist-Leninist Groups of Finland I want to salute this seminar on the Juche-idea. We are happy to see representatives of so many different anti-imperialist organisations and ethnic minorities here. 1. The Juche-idea is a newly discovered idea in the history of mankind. It is vital to study the Juche-idea for all revolutionaries in the world. We are sure in the future the Juche-idea will draw increasing attention also among philosophical and social researches inside the academic circles. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has scored better, or much better economic results than any other socialist countries. Also CIA has admitted in it's report, published a few years ago, that the rate of economic growth in DPRK has been for a long time about 15 percents a year, and the growth seems to continue as rapidly. It is very remarkable, because all other socialist - or those who call themselves socialist - countries have met with increasing economical difficulties. And, what's most important, this Korean achievement has been reached by adherence strictly to the principles of scientific socialism: North-Korea is the democratic dictatorship of the proletariat, and not the so called 'state of the whole people' (that is to say, the state of the byrocratic capitalists). The proletarian politics and not the profit principle is in command of the economical work. The production serves the needs of the people and not the needs of individual egoists. There doesn't exist inflation or unemployment in North-Korea as it does even in China today. - All socialists should be interested seriously in the ideological and political line, which has lead the construction of socialism in the North-Korea. 2. In our opinion, Kim Il Sung has developed creatively the scientific socialism in several ways, and has raised it into a qualitatively new stage. The Juche-idea emphasizes the importance of conciousness of human being more than it has been done among traditional socialist thinking.
of revolutionary philosophical thinking. The Juche-idea has defined the attributes of man in a very interesting manner. North-Korea emphasizes the principle of independence more than any other country in the world. Indeed, the sovereignity of all nations should be strictly honoured. How to estimate if a country is progressive or not? The decisive criterion is, if the country upholds independence of its own and supports the independence of other countries. All that is original is worth of studying, and all original ideas, that has been developed in a many-sided way, are even more worth of studying. As comrade Kim Jong Il has in his remarkable esseys very clearly pointed out, there is such a deepgoing originality in Kim Il Sungism and, furthermore, it is a very consistent and systematic theory. 3. Kim Il Sungism has been created amidst the very difficult and complicated conditions of the Korean revolution. The Korean communists couldn't have won the guerilla war against Japanese imperialists if they hadn't chosen a way of their own in party building. Also in socialist construction the Korean people had to develope entirely new methods. And when it comes to world history, it is also worth of noticing that the downhill of the U.S. imperialism began during the war of Korea. 4. We Finnish revolutionary communists have grasped the Juche-idea in the course of our practical struggle. The Finnish people has struggled for its national salvation through centuries on the other hand against the Russian and on the other hand against the Swedish imperialism. And when drawing conclusions of our national history (especially of the history of the revolutionary workers' movement) we must point out, that the progress of ideas and the development of the ideological conciousness of the masses has been the most decisive thing, not the development of the forces of production as such, nor the plain instinctive, spontanious class-struggle. 5. The conditions in the contemporary Finland are very different from those in Korea. The Juche-idea was developed in an extremely difficult struggle against physical oppression. In Finland the living standards are relatively high also within the working-class today. Alienation, disrupted human relationships and mental misery in its different forms
are the central social problems, but not the economic misery. Currently the oppression takes mainly spritual and not physical forms. The Korean society is a very puritanian one. The position of the traditional family- institution is strong. The changes of the sexual habits in the western countries cannot be explained only or mainly in view of the imperialist degeneration - the sexual revolution is an inevitable result of the industralism of the society (and it will occure in the future also in North Korea). In Finland (and in the Scandinavian countries) the traditional family-institution has begun already (slowly but clearly) to disappear. Indeed, we must study the Juche-idea in a very independent and creative way. In western countries it's impossible to adapt the Juche-idea if it's not criticized systematically at the same time. The criticism must be based on an entirely new insight, which can be created only in the course of the practical struggle. Such has been the case always in the history of ideas - we mean the concept of dialectical negation. 6. In our opinion, Mao Zedong thought is the starting point for the criticism of the Juche-idea. Regarding several questions Mao Zedong was wiser than Kim Il Sung. We don't consider the Soviet Union a socialist country. The Soviet's war in Afghanistan, Vietnam's war in Kamputsea and Ethiopia's war in Eritrea are just as cruel as the wars waged by U.S imperialists in Korea and in Vietnam. The crisis in Poland has just begun, the Polish people will arise again and certainly it won't take a long time before there will be popular revolts also in other countries of Eastern Europe. - Those coming events can be understood only on the basis of Mao Zedong thought. - But on the other hand: even if Mao was right when he started the Cultural Revolution, he didn't manage to define correct methods for it, and the mistakes made by Mao can be claryfied only on the basis of Juche-idea. - That is to say, there must be created a synthesis of the Mao Zedong thought and the Juche-idea. 7. The crisis of the revolutionary organisations is very deep, indeed, in the western countries. It's clear, that there is a great need of new philosophical, psychological and political ideas. We think that in the present era one can't create any genuinly original viewpoints without taking the Juche-idea as one of the starting points. That's why the historical significance of this kind of seminars is very great. We are grateful to the comrades of Mosquito Press that they
have arranged a possibility for us to attend this seminar. 8. The unity of all anti-imperialist forces is a very important question of principle. While supporting the activities of Mosquito Press we don't want, by no means, belittle the significance of several other leftist organisations. Especially we appreciate the criticism of social-imperialism and propagating Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong thought by RCL (ML). 9. Mosquito Press has seized the great challenge - you have started to organize systematical study of the Juche-idea in Britain. That's a very honourable and a very difficult task. The man in the street has much prejudice towards North-Korea, which is readily understandable. But if you adhere strictly to an independent and creative attitude, you will surely make remarkable progress soon. In this seminar you have tried to combine the study of the Juche-idea and the study of the theoreticians of Black Power and James Connoly's writings. In our opinion that is a good example of creative and independent attitude. Long live scientific socialism! Long live the Juche-idea! Long live the practical unity of all anti-imperialist organisations! ( A message to the seminar of the Juche Idea, organised by Mosquito Press, London 23. 3. 1985)
