The next few weeks will be crucial for all friends of Korea and all those concerned to defend and preserve peace in the Far East and the with world, play / the expiry yesterday of the International Atomic Energy Authority's so-called 'deadline' for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to open its Sovereign Military bases for so-called 'inspection' with and / Korea's heroic stand in defence of its independence and the Socialist system which the Chose for themselves Korean people / and which they have won and defended with their blood. The imperialists have both general and particular reasons for pointing the spearhead of these attack at Korea, and both of whom are related to the 'new world order' proclaimed by George Bush following his victory in the Gulf War.

-2- The attack on Korea is an attack on Socialism - an attempt to eliminate it from the face of the earth. Following the restoration of Capitalism in eastern Europe and the disintegration of the Soviet Union, as a result of the collusion and Conspiracy between the imperialists and the renegades of Socialism, such as Gorbachov, Yeltsin and Shevardnadze, the internationally-aligned imperialists are now trying by every means to destroy Socialism in Cuba, China, Vietnam, Laos and Korea. In particular, their efforts are concentrated on Korea because this is a country that defends the revolutionary principles of socialism, is faithful to its internationalist obligations and which has built a powerful independent national economy that demonstrates that socialism alone can provide a decent life for all the working people in both town and countryside. In its March 15th article, "Socialism is our People's faith and Life", "Rodong Sinmun", the organ of the Workers' Party of Korea, put matters as follows:

Taking off the mask of appeasement and deception, the imperialists are undisguisedly perpetrating manoeuvres to crush and suffocate the revolutionary people of the world. We are living in an era when a fierce struggle to defend and protect socialism in a state of acute confrontation with imperialists is being waged." Furthermore, the attack on Korea is part of the series of attacks that is being launched against all the independent-minded countries of the Third World, particularly those with the capacity to make some material challenge to imperialist domination, such as the oil rich countries of Iraq, Iran and Libya. This offensive against Korean independence and Korean socialism finds its reflection in the British media. Relying on the fact that a vast geographical distance separates our two successive countries, and on the fact that the British governments have done their best to isolate the

-4- DPRK and to prevent normal interchange between our peoples, as well as by manipulating both anti-communist and racist like anti-Asian prejudices, so-called quality papers such as "The Independent" and 'The Guardian' have utilised such bought rove academic renegades as Aidan Foster-Carter, who once described himself as a marxist and a friend of Korea, to try and convince British people that north Korea is some sort of orwellian totalitarion nightmare populated by crushed, cowed and brainwashed zombies and ruled over and tyrannised by a meglomaniac dictator. Anybody who has been fortunate enough to visit the DPRK knows that nothing could be further from the truth. We need to tell the working people of Britain that the DPRK is a country which has no unemployment, where everybody has a home and where rents -including charges lighting, heating and maintenance/- account for no more than 2-3 per cent of income. It is a country where every workplace has a creche and kindergarten, where everyone has

Millions of ordinary and decent people in Britain who are rightly worried about just what is happening to our society need to know that in People's Korea Women can go where they want when they want without fear and parents need have no worries are about where their children/ and what they are doing. Above all, people need to know that the Korean people are not ruled over by a power- Crazed dictator, but they are blessed with a leader who for more than 60 years has devoted very all his L considerable energies and talents to fighting for the freedom and liberation of Korea, for the enhancement of the peoples quality of life and for the freedom and liberation of the working and oppressed people around the world. The only dictators in North Korea are the working people of town and countryside and the working intellectuals. President Kim Il Sung and Secretary Kim Jong Il are their Most

It is a sad and shameful commentary on just how much concepts of 'gun boat' diplomacy have been rehabilitated in the post-Gulf war period that practically the moment this present crisis erupted three leading British newspapers printed editorials backing possible Military aggression against Korea. "If economic sanctions do not work, Military stripes will have to be considered." (The Times March 13 1993) "It may be that in the long run, Kim Il Sung and others like him will be deterred only by the kind of action that the Israelis took in 1981 when they bombed Iraq's nuclear reactor." (Daily Telegraph March 16 1993) "In the end, there may be no alternative to a carefully aimed bomb attack." (Independent March 19 1993). * In the light of such remarks - and their probable role as media stacking horses for

-7- Western diplomatic agendas - one needs to remember that the DPRK has never threatened or attached any other country. Rather, it won its independence in bloody struggle against Japanese colonialism and just two years after the founding of the Republic it had to wage a bitter, defensive war of three years duration against the US and 15 of its satellite countries. Since that time - over 40 years - the Korean people have lived with the tragedy of a divided and partitioned country. They have lived with a constant threat of war and with more than 40,000 US troops, armed with more than 1,000 nuclear weapons, occupying South Korea. South Korea, too, has a nuclear programme and almost a year ago, on April 9 1992, the 'Guardian' reported that British Nuclear Fuels was hoping to reprocess nuclear fuel from South Korea, which would involve the return of plutonium to the country. Japan In the second half of last year, Japan imported a huge quantity of enriched

Yes, there is, indeed, a nuclear threat on the Korean peninsula but it does not come from the DPRK. It is aimed at the DPRK. As a non-nuclear state, the DPRK joined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and signed a Safeguards Agreement in an attempt to defend its independence and security, not so as to give then up. The DPRK cooperated in with all reasonable requests of the IAEA, even though, despite the signing of the north-south agreement on the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, there has been no inspection of any kind carried out on the US bases and other military installations in south Korea. What the DPRK absolutely could not accept was that the IAEA should be misused so that employed CIA satellite spy photographs should be used to force it to open its non-nuclear military
