Speech by Keith Bennett at the celebratory meeting for the birthday of Comrade Kim Jong Il called by the Society for Friendship with Korea (SFK) - February 15 1996 Dear friends and comrades from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Comrades and Friends, First, I would like to thank the Society for Friendship with Korea for inviting me to speak at this important meeting in celebration of the birthday of the supreme leader of the Korean people, Comrade Kim Jong Il, which is being held at this significant venue of the British and international working class movements. To hold such a celebration here is, I believe, a small but significant sign that genuine internationalism is steadily consolidating its positions within the working class movement of this, the oldest imperialist country. Comrade Kim Jong Il is the leader responsible for the defence and development of socialism in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, a country which, despite its many internal and external difficulties, has continued to firmly adhere to socialist and revolutionary principles at a time when a number of other socialist countries have collapsed and disintegrated and when the international bourgeoisie thought it could crow loudly over the supposed “failure of socialism”, “collapse of communism” and even the “end of history”. It will soon be two years since Comrade Kim Jong Il assumed the full responsibility of leading and guiding Korean socialism, following the sudden and shocking passing away of the father of the Korean revolution and the senior statesman of the international communist and anti- imperialist movements, Comrade Kim Il Sung.
