Just as Liverpool society has developed out of the bloody history of colonialism and capitalism to create a multi-national working class people, so Bleasdale's writings represent the triumph of the human spirit, and Liverpool folk in particular, in the face of the human, social and economic devastation of Thatcherism, that has turned Liverpool from a great city of empire into a monument to its terminal decline. His 'Boys from the Blackstuff' has given characters and phrases to English culture and the English language representing the determination of the 'small man' not to be swept away by the malign social and economic forces oppressing him. It need hardly be added that this type of genuinely internationalist culture - rich in national forms and traditions - is the complete opposite of the 'coca cola culture' that acts to reinforce US world domination, promote decadence and obliterate national culture.
