New Age, 1978-1980
Title • New Age
Date(s) • 1978-1980 (Creation)
Level of description • Series
Extent and medium • 17 items
Name of creator(s) • Communist Workers' Movement

Scope and content • Political newspaper of the Communist Workers' Movement (CWM), as successor publication to its previous periodical, Workers’ Notebook. 17 issues of New Age were published between February 1978 and January 1980 (the last issue was numbered 18, but this was due to an error in numbering -- there was in fact no issue No. 16). It was initially edited and produced by members of the CWM National Committee, principally its National Organizer, JG, and Keith Bennett. Hugh Goodacre soon took over the production of the newspaper, and was then coopted onto the CWM’s National Committee as its Editor.
In January 1980, the CWM formally united into a single organisation with the Revolutionary Communist League of Britain (RCLB). Already from late 1979, as part of the unification process, New Age had already begun to collaborate in the production of the RCLB’s newspaper, Class Struggle, the latter’s Vol. 3.No. 26 of 1979 having appeared with both mastheads on the front page.
New Age regularly included articles by Keith Bennett on international affairs, particularly in relation to the leadership of China and the other socialist countries, as well as the polemical standpoints then existing among them, and both he and other CWM members wrote regularly on Palestine and global national liberation struggles. The newspaper took a decisive and uncompromising standpoint of support for Ireland’s Republican Movement.
